Chapter One
The job interview was going well.
Neither of the two men had hated her on sight, and she hadn’t said anything too stupid. Yet. Of course the longer the interview went on, the more likely that was to happen, but so far, so good. Mhairi McLeod crossed her fingers and tried not to fidget.
“We run a chain of upmarket restaurants and delis in the New York State area. We’re here in Scotland partly on vacation and partly to source some new products. Whisky, salmon, all the quality foods Scotland is famed for.”
Cameron Lindsay did most of the talking, and Mhairi nodded, trying to appear intelligent. The dark-haired man had a good Scots name though his accent was definitely American. In fact, his accent was amazing, his voice rich and smooth as— “Honey,” she blurted.
“Excuse me?”
“Heather honey. That’s good too. You might like to try some of that. For your shops.”
The two men exchanged looks, and Mhairi felt her face flame. She hadn’t even got the job, and here she was telling them what to do.
“Heather honey. What a great idea,” said Rob, the blond one. The really good-looking blond one. He nudged his companion. “Isn’t that a great idea, Cam?”
Cameron ignored him and glanced down at his notes as though determined to follow a prepared script. “We’re wondering why exactly you applied for this job, Miss McLeod. It’s a casual driving job whereas it says here you’re a qualified teacher.”
Mhairi had been expecting the question. “I am. But the job I want won’t be available for a few years yet, so after the summer I’m going to look for temporary work as a substitute teacher. Until then I just need something to tide me over.”
“Oh?” Cameron Lindsay raised a well-shaped, black eyebrow. He was gorgeous too, but in a very different way from Rob. His was a brooding, Heathcliff sort of handsome. Heavier built and more muscular that Rob. More…masculine. He was definitely the more serious of the two, and the green eyes that studied her were frighteningly intelligent. But the faint crinkle lines at the corners suggested he laughed a lot too. Just not today. The silence stretched as he waited for her to say more.
“I want to teach at my old school,” Mhairi explained. “It’s tiny. In fact there are only eight pupils at the moment, so the school only has one teacher. I need to wait for Miss Lennox to retire, but when she does, the job is mine.” Too much information; she was babbling, but interviews made her nervous. And nerves made her talk. Sadly, all too often, they made her talk rubbish.
The two men exchanged another look she didn’t understand, and her nerves increased. To be honest it wasn’t just the interview that had her so wound up—although she desperately needed this job. Her two prospective employers were so utterly gorgeous she found them completely intimidating.
She wished she’d had something smarter to wear, something other than jeans. Although the two Americans wore casual clothes, it was designer, platinum-card casual, and Mhairi felt completely outclassed. But when she’d come to Edinburgh, she hadn’t expected to be interviewing for a job and so hadn’t packed anything suitable.
“We knew from your resume that you lived on an island.” Cam was frowning now. “But we had no idea it was so small.”
“Tiny,” she confirmed. “There are only a couple of hundred people living permanently on St. Colm. More in the summer with visitors and holidaymakers, of course.”
Rob laughed. “There are more people than that living in our building in Manhattan.”
Mhairi smiled, responding instinctively to his warmth and charm. “It must be incredible to live there, but I don’t know if I could stand it for long. I’m used to walking out the front door and seeing nothing but gulls and ocean. The city—any city—gets to me after a while, even a small one like Edinburgh.”
Again they exchanged a look. Again she couldn’t read it. Cam opened his mouth to speak, but Rob put a hand on the other man’s and jumped in quickly. “We also have a place in New Hampshire. No neighbors for miles. All the solitude anyone could want. And we’re thinking of buying a place at the beach too.”
They were thinking of buying a place? Another restaurant? Or did he mean they lived together as well as worked together? Mhairi looked again at her prospective employers. They sat close. Like, really close, she saw now. Rob’s hand still rested on Cam’s, and Cam hadn’t pulled away. They looked at her as though waiting for the penny to drop. And then, sadly, it did.
“You’re gay? I mean, you’re a couple?” she blurted.
“Bi actually,” said Rob as casually as he might tell her what kind of car he drove. He smiled at Cam, but Cam’s gaze stayed on Mhairi.
“Is that a problem?” he asked softly.
Mhairi could feel heat creep up her neck. “Of course not. I love gays.”
Had she really said that? She wanted the floor to open and swallow her. “I don’t mean I love them. I mean I haven’t got anything against them…against you.” She stopped, squirming.
“Some of your best friends are gay?” offered Rob, grinning.
She suspected her face was as red as a beetroot by now, one of the downsides of having red hair and milk-white skin. “No. To be honest, I don’t think I know anyone who is gay,” she admitted. “I just think it’s great people can live their lives the way they choose. Not that you chose to be gay,” she added hurriedly. “Or did you?” Shutupshutupshutup, she chanted to herself but was unable to stop. “Choose to be gay, I mean? No, no of course you didn’t.” She clenched her jaw in an effort to hold back the insanity, but the words just kept tumbling out. “So you’re a couple? That’s so cool. You look very nice together. Very…very…” Finally she stopped, desperately sucking in air and with absolutely no idea how to end this.
“Gay?” suggested Rob, trying not to laugh.
Handsome, built, gorgeous. “No. You look…good together,” she finished lamely. But it was true, they did.
/>
“Mhairi?” Cam spoke up. “Would you like to stop talking now?”
“Oh please. Yes. I would. I do this all the time when I get nervous. I’m so sorry.”
No way she had the job now; she may as well have the words country bumpkin tattooed on her forehead. Men like this wouldn’t want someone so awkward and unsophisticated working for them, even if it was just as a temporary driver.
“I think we’ve heard enough,” Cam said, and her heart sank at his tone.
So did Rob’s, it seemed. “Let’s not rush,” he began, but Cam’s look silenced him.
“I can start straightaway,” Mhairi said desperately. “I don’t need to give notice anywhere else. And I know Edinburgh really well. My grandparents lived here, and I spent my holidays here. I’ll make a much better guide than any book.”
“Most of our traveling will be outside Edinburgh. And we don’t need anyone to start today,” said Cam, not unkindly. “We’re both pretty jet-lagged and thought we’d have a quiet weekend. We’ll let you know by Monday about the job.”
Monday? She couldn’t wait till Monday. She needed this job. Not the least of all because it was live-in and she currently had nowhere to stay.
“Is that a problem?” Cam was watching her and seemed to miss nothing.
What to do? Say yes and admit she was a loser and homeless? Say no and go crawling back home when everyone thought she was enjoying the summer in the city?
“Why are you in Edinburgh now?” asked Cam suddenly. “Aren’t the schools on holiday? Surely you won’t pick up any teaching work till the start of the new term?”
He was far too astute for Mhairi’s liking. “I came to see a friend, but it didn’t work out.”
“Boyfriend?” asked Rob.
She nodded glumly.
“You had a fight?”
Difficult to fight with a man while he licked another woman’s pussy. Mhairi had stormed out, spent the evening online applying for every job she could find, and then slept on a friend’s settee. This was the only reply she’d had so far, but the job was perfect. “It was a surprise visit. Let’s just say I was the one surprised.” She felt her face flame for the umpteenth time since she had walked into the room.
“Ah.” Rob was oozing sympathy and anxiety. Mhairi suspected that if it was up to him, she would have the job, but Cam’s face was impossible to read. He glanced at Rob, who was looking at him like a child begging to be allowed to keep a stray kitten.
Still Cam resisted as though fighting some internal battle. Eventually, though, he sighed, defeated. “We don’t need you to start work until Monday, but we have a suite here in the hotel. You can move in whenever you like.”
For a moment she couldn’t believe she’d heard right. “You mean it? I’ve got the job?”
The pair of them stood up, towering over her. Rob looked thrilled, and even Cameron smiled. It was fleeting but so sexy; Mhairi’s tummy gave a little flip. Flipped so much, in fact, she had to remind herself they were not just gay but taken. And, of course, completely out of her league anyway.
“Thank you, thank you so much. My bag’s at a friend’s house. I’ll go get it right now.”
Rob slipped his arm through hers, then froze as Mhairi stiffened. “What? Too forward? Sorry.”
Yes. Not so much his familiarity; more the way she had reacted to his touch, the highly inappropriate sexual tingle that shot down her arm. “Of course not,” she said quickly, determined they wouldn’t think her even less sophisticated than they did already. “You just took me by surprise.” Seriously by surprise. Sexual tingles didn’t usually play any part in her day.
“Well, tell me if I’m overfamiliar,” said Rob, tucking her arm into his again. “I’ve read all about Scottish reserve. Between you and me, I think Cam inherited more than his fair share from his ancestors. Whereas I’m all about my Italian grandparents. Now come with me and I’ll show you your room.”
* * * *
Cam said nothing until Rob finally showed her out of the suite, but looking at his lover’s face, he knew he had a fight ahead of him.
“What do you think?” asked Rob eagerly.
“I think we have a driver for the next six weeks,” said Cam.
“No. She’s more than that. Couldn’t you feel it?”
“Rob,” said Cam patiently, “she totally freaked at us being gay, and I don’t think she even knows what bi means. Can you imagine her reaction if we’d mentioned the rest?”
“But you gave her the job. You felt it too. Admit it.”
“We could hardly leave her homeless.”
When he and Rob had advertised this job, they hadn’t been looking for any more than a driver. But when Mhairi McLeod’s application had dropped into their in-box last night, Rob had been instantly smitten.
“We talked about this,” Rob had reminded him. “About how we both miss having a woman in our lives.”
“The right woman.”
“How do we know she isn’t? I think it’s fate.”
Cam wasn’t so sure, but when Rob set his heart on something, he was hard to dissuade.
Cam glanced down at the file open on the desk. In the picture, Mhairi MacLeod stood on the bank of a loch, the shimmering surface reflecting an impossibly blue sky, while purple, heather-covered hills dotted with sheep rose in the background. Her long red hair was blowing wildly, and she held it back with one hand, laughing. Stunning though the image was, it hadn’t done her justice.
“Maybe if her island wasn’t so small—”
“Small doesn’t necessarily mean small-minded,” Rob pointed out.
“But it might,” said Cam, knowing one of them had to stay grounded. “It won’t work. Even if she likes us, there will be villagers with pitchforks coming after us for corrupting her.”
“We’re not corrupting her,” said Rob sharply. “If things work out, we want to marry her. And don’t look at me like that!”
“Like what?”
“As if life would be so much simpler if I just left everything to you. Look, we both know what this is really about. Your family cut you off because they didn’t approve of your sexuality, and you’re worried Mhairi’s family will do the same to her.”
Cam stiffened. “My family holds strong beliefs—”
“They tried to cure you of liking men. Stop defending them.”
Cam’s jaw tightened. Even after all these years it was hard for him to reconcile the loving community who raised him with the empty-eyed strangers who had closed their doors on him. “Even if they don’t shun her, I doubt many parents will be happy with their daughter bringing home two lovers. Come on,” he urged. “You saw how flustered she was when you told her about us. I think we need a woman a little more comfortable with her sexuality, don’t you?” And a lot more comfortable with their sexuality.
“And I think you’re too quick to write her off,” said Rob stubbornly.
Cam bit back his frustration. “Think about it. Think about what it could mean for her if things do work out between us and we do all fall in love. She might never be able to go home again. You saw her face when she talked about her island. I don’t think we can ask that of her.”
“Her family isn’t necessarily like yours.”
“But what if it is?” Cam was equally insistent. “Do we have the right to make her choose?”
Rob picked up Mhairi’s photo and traced her image with his finger. “I really like her.”
Cam looked on helplessly. He loved this man so much. If he could, he would give him the world, but he doubted he could give him Mhairi McLeod. Unless Cam was very careful, Rob was going to be hurt.
“She liked us, though,” said Rob slyly. “She couldn’t keep her eyes off you.”
Only because she had recognized him as the one with authority. But Cam had seen her sneaking looks at Rob too. And Rob was right about one thing; Mhairi was gorgeous.
“Did you see that ass?” said Rob. “And those legs?”
He had seen both.
For a man who didn’t pay much attention to other people when Rob was around, his cock had been semihard throughout the interview. “Legs that will carry her straight out the door if you suggest anything improper. Or to the nearest police station. Give it up.”
“I’d love to take her shopping,” said Rob, ignoring him. “Her clothes were terrible, but her body is fantastic. I can see her now, a plunge bra barely holding those glorious tits, a thong outlining that gorgeous ass. And that sweet, Cupid’s bow mouth sucking on your cock.”
Desire hit Cam, hard and fast. He crossed the room in two strides and kissed Rob on the mouth. His hand went to the front of Rob’s trousers, and he found exactly what he expected. Rob too was hard as steel.
“Does it turn you on?” Cam demanded. “The thought of her sucking me off?”
In reply Rob ground against him. “You know it does. I could barely think straight the whole time she was here. In fact, if I hadn’t thought your head would explode, I’d have tried to convince her that getting naked was part of the interview.” Kissing his way down Cam’s body, Rob sank to his knees.
Cam tensed, looking down at his lover’s blond head, his belly tightening in helpless anticipation as Rob began to unzip his trousers. He should stop this, make sure Rob understood why Mhairi McLeod might not be the right woman for them. He should. But right now he couldn’t remember why.
Rob pulled Cam’s trousers down a little and nuzzled into him. Cam drew his head back and shuddered in pleasure, though he still struggled to stay in control. “Do you think this is wise, Rob? She could come back any minute.”
Rob freed his cock and grinned up at his lover. “The state you’re in, this won’t take long.” His tongue traced the length of Cam’s shaft from base to tip, licking him like a lollipop. “Mmmm. I think she definitely turned you on.”
She had. A lot. But not as much as Rob was doing. “Just don’t get your hopes up,” Cam said, willing himself not to weaken.
“You worry too much.” Rob mouthed Cam’s balls. “Let’s just see how things go, okay?” Without waiting for an answer, he opened his mouth and closed it around the head of Cam’s cock.
